The Puffin and Petrel Patrol is a volunteer-driven initiative focused on rescuing stranded juvenile Atlantic Puffins during their fledging season in August. Each night, dedicated volunteers patrol community hotspots in search of these young birds, who are then safely housed overnight and released along the coast the following morning. Facilitated by CPAWS-NL (Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter) and supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), this program not only rescues stranded birds but also collects valuable data on puffin health and migration patterns, contributing to the conservation of these seabirds.
Key Responsibilities
Program Delivery:
- Assist in the set-up and take-down of nightly patrols in Bay Bulls.
- Provide guidance and support to volunteers during patrols
- Go on the morning boat releases in Bay Bulls
- Ensure thorough data collection and documentation during patrols.
Volunteer Coordination:
- Conduct nightly training and information sessions to ensure volunteers are well-prepared and equipped.
- Support volunteers in their duties and provide assistance as needed.
Data Collection Support:
- Assist volunteers in documenting puffin sightings and collecting necessary data.
- Ensure accurate and thorough recording of stranded bird locations, environmental conditions, and volunteer participation.
Equipment Management:
- Maintain and manage field equipment, ensuring all safety and operational supplies are in good condition.
- Distribute safety equipment to volunteers and ensure its proper use.
Requirements
- Must have a reliable vehicle.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
- Must be willing to go on the boats for releases
- Passion for wildlife conservation and community engagement.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and early mornings.
- Comfortable working outdoors and potentially challenging conditions.
Additional Information
- Headquarters is at Bay Bulls, and candidates must be able to go on boat tours for releases.
- Multiple positions available; flexibility in schedule based on individual availability will be considered during interviews.
